Visits to Welsh for Adults classes within the county

Visits to Welsh for Adults classes within the county
During February, Alun Pugh and Iona Herbert, members of the menter's staff, visited several Welsh for Adults classes within the county of Neath Port Talbot. It wasn't possible to visit every one of the classes, but Iona went along to the Saturday sessions at Neath College and Cwrt Sart School. It was extremely gratifying to see so many people prepared to give of their time to attend a Welsh course on a Saturday.

The main reason for visiting the classes was to explain what a Menter Iaith is and to introduce ourselves to both the learners and their tutors. We also gave away calendars produced by the Welsh Language Board and everyone appeared delighted to receive one.

The menter intends keeping a data base of all Welsh learners within the county and each Welsh learner was given a form to complete. However, it is realised that not all Welsh learners have received this form. If you are one of these people, please contact the Menter's office at 01792 864949.

From the information collected, the menter intends organising events for learners in the near future.

So why learn Welsh?
People learn Welsh for many reasons, some of the most popular are:

  Learners

For quite some time now a group of people, both learners and Welsh speakers, have been meeting every Saturday morning at the Neath Port Talbot College Centre, Queen Stree, Neath. All kinds of activities are held there, e.g. speakers, quizzes, but the main purpose of these meetings is that Welsh learners have an opportunity to meet with other learners and Welsh speakers. So, if you are going through the process of learning Welsh and would like to meet others in the same situation, why not pop along to Queen Street, Neath for a chat and a cuppa between 10.30 am and 12.15pm. The meetings are held in the meeting room behind the office. Just walk in and you will receive a warm welcome.

CYD

A branch of CYD - a learners' organisation - meets every Thursday evening at 8 pm at the Neath Rugby Club. They have organised a ramble through Gnoll Park next Thursday evening, April 17th commencing at 6 pm outside the Visitors Centre and hopefully ending up at the Rugby Club around 8 pm. For further information please ring the menter on 01792 864949.
